Local RCMP are
concerned with snowmobile thefts in the Revelstoke area and have
undertaken a number steps to counter this problem:
- Revelstoke RCMP
diligently patrol the local hotels and motels, noting how
many snowmobiles are at each and watching for suspicious
activity.
- This winter, the
Revelstoke RCMP, ICBC and the Snowmobile Revelstoke
Society have compiled information for snowmobilers in a
pamphlet form which includes tips for theft prevention. Over
3000 of these pamphlets have been distributed to local area
businesses.
- Police are asking that
owners take simple precautions such as investing in
anti-theft devices and disabling tow vehicles at night.
- Police want the public
to know that snowmobile theft is organized and fills the
demand of many individuals who purchase stolen machines at
reduced prices.
-
This leads police to believe that many persons who
purchase stolen sleds are not checking for
identification numbers or registration papers.
- It
is imperative that when purchasing a snowmobile, buyers
assume responsibility for ensuring that they are not
perpetuating the theft cycle by paying for stolen
property.
-
Purchasers need to check the vehicle identification
number with your local police before you buy and ask
questions of the seller about the origin of the machine,
and insist to see the bill of sale.
-
Persons who risk purchasing stolen property take the
risk of being charged criminally.
- The Revelstoke RCMP
recognize the economical benefits that the community enjoys
from the large influx of sledding visitors.
- Revelstoke RCMP are
continuing to work with the community in finding solutions,
however we recognize that we play one part in stopping this
problem and need community support in stopping auto and
snowmobile theft in our community.
- Please contact the
local detachment at 837-5255 with any helpful information or
if you wish to remain anonymous to please contact Crime
Stoppers by calling 1-800 -222- TIPS.
The Revelstoke RCMP Detachment is committed to make Revelstoke a
safe recreational destination.
